Definition
An entrapment neuropathy involving the median nerve at the wrist.
Prognosis
Variable with complete resolution in some, and appreciable relief after local injection in many. Surgery offers complete relief.
General Measures
Treatment of underlying cause like ischaemia, electrolyte disturbances, infections, hypothermia, hypothyrodism, drug-induced as could happen with digitalis, dopamine, isopranaline, adrenaline, tricyclic antidepressants, Theophylines.
Anoxia, Acid base disturbances, Physiologic, Psycologic stress, etc., can be responsible and would need management.
Advice to Patient
Avoidance of relavent factors stated above.
The need for sustained therapy for potentially lethal arrhythmias.
Follow Up
Depends on nature and cause of arrhythmia being treated.
Inadequate Response
To be managed by a cardiologist, preferably in hospital setting.
Prevention
Of embolisation inarrhythmias with such potential (like sustained AF), with anticoagulants.
